The University of Aberdeen is an ambitious, research-driven institution ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world. It is committed to becoming one of the world’s top 100. This ambition is supported by outstanding recent performance and major investment. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise demonstrated the quality of Aberdeen’s research with 89% judged to be of international quality and 55% to be world leading or internationally excellent. Research income has trebled in the past 12 years. In the past decade the University has invested over £170 million on infrastructure and has made a further commitment of £230 million of investment, which includes £55 million for an outstanding new library, providing unparalleled facilities for its 14,500 students and 3,800 staff. Aberdeen’s Sixth Century Fundraising Campaign has attracted support of over £120 million, and the University has recently announced a £15 million programme of investment over the next three years to strengthen its intellectual and research leadership.
At this most exciting time the University wishes to make two pivotal leadership appointments within Schools of the College of Arts and Social Sciences.
HEAD OF THE SCHOOL OF DIVINITY, HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY (Ref: N3432)
HEAD OF THE SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (Ref: N3433)
Each School requires a leader who is already well established as an outstanding academic with an international reputation in one of the School disciplines. These disciplines comprise Divinity, History, History of Art, Philosophy and Religious Studies in the one School and Celtic, English (including Literature, Language and Linguistics), Film and Visual Culture, French, German, Hispanic Studies in the other.
You will provide inspiring leadership as the Schools build upon their established strengths to ensure further success in research, enhancing research profile where appropriate in certain disciplines, and in the ongoing promotion of highly effective learning and teaching. In addition to a distinguished research publications portfolio, candidates, who are likely already to be of Professorial standing, or who clearly merit appointment at that level, must be able to demonstrate their ability to direct and manage large and complex Schools and to motivate a high calibre group in the attainment of demanding and clearly defined goals.
These prestigious roles offer demanding and stimulating challenges, excellent rewards and the opportunity to enjoy a superb quality of life. They are for three to five year periods (to be discussed with the successful candidates) following which there will be the opportunity to return to a research-oriented academic role or possibly to take on an enhanced leadership role as the University continues to expand.
